7 Comments:
As one can see, many of the characters name are symbolic or clue the reader into his or her personality traits. Here are some of the following:
Chauchat: This means "hot cat" in French and we all figured that her seductive ways with Hans and other men really showed her to be a "hot cat."
Settembrini: "sette" means seven in Italian. This reference of the number seven comes up many times through out the novel.
Wahsal: His name means "sorrow" in German. This could help show how he is very much in love with Clavdia, yet she has no feelings for him.
Dr.Krowkowski: His name means "black bird" or as we saw within the name, "crow", which show that he is associated with the color black and represents evil.
Tous-les-Duex: This is the nickname of the Mexican woman. It means "loss of two" in French and this is exactly what is occurring in her life. She is losing her second son in the sanatorium.
Peeperkorn: His name reminded of us peppercorn, which is the dried fruit of the black pepper. This shows his dried out personality.
